Principle of nickel hydride battery

Nickel metal hydride battery is the secondary battery possible to repeat charge and discharge of electricity, where nickel metal hydride is used as node active material and hydrogen storage alloy or metal hydride as cathode active material, and alkaline aqueous solution using hydroxide potassium as major component is used as the electrolyte.

It is expressed as nickel metal hydride battery as full name and Ni-MH as abbreviated name. (It differs from the pressurized type of Ni-H2 battery.)

Nickel metal hydride battery has the density of energy higher compared to nickel cadmium battery and it is possible to make high capacity, and it has the characteristic of strong resistance to the overcharge and over discharge.

Principle of sealing nickel metal hydride battery

Sealing of battery and high performance are realized by making the electrolyte to be non-liquid and preventing the leakage of liquid using porous absorbent fabric as partition membrane, and improving the ventilation of gas.

  • It is possible to seal since the internal pressure is maintained constant due to the stable state of reaction because the oxygen gas generated in the anode at the time of overcharge is absorbed in the cathode, of which capacity is made bigger.
  • Oxygen gas diffused to the cathode through electrolyte is restored to water or reduced to water by oxidizing the hydrogen in the cathode.
  • It is possible to seal since it is composed of useful capacity, charge reserve and discharge reserve.

Hybrid electric vehicle (HEV), which is an automobile where the power sources more than two (engine and battery) are used, is the vehicle of the next generation of which fuel consumption and hazardous gas emission are reduced remarkably.

Fuel consumption is reduced as much as possible by using battery in starting and driving of the hybrid electric car as main power source and in accelerating while driving as auxiliary power source, and the system possible to maximize the energy efficiency by recovering surplus energy while braking is equipped.

It is the system which increased efficiency and epochally remarkably reduced cost of the fuel cell power system by being designed to supply the power from fuel cell system, store the surplus energy in the Ni-MH battery at normal time (low load), and supply at the same time from the fuel cell power system and the Ni-MH battery at the peak time.

And the Ni-MH battery secures the stability of the system by playing the roll of auxiliary power source in preparation for starting and malfunction of fuel cell power system.
